VANCOUVER — It might almost be cheaper to buy a gold medal than to buy tickets to watch the US and Canadian teams of National Hockey League superstars meet in the Olympic final on Sunday given the price scalpers are charging for seats.Internet resale websites have ticket offers stretching from 7,275 dollars each at Ticketloot and 6,229 dollars for a suite seat at StubHub, one of the most popular US and Canadian fan resale sights for North American sport events. While those are at the top end, the nosebleed seats among the 18,000 at Canada Hockey Place are running as high as 2,150 dollars. And that's not counting the touts on street corners hawking tickets for a grudge-match in a sport that hockey-mad Canadians are devoted to by the millions."When we put the gold medal hockey tickets on sale two years ago, we could have filled Canada Hockey Place 18 times over based on the demand," Vancouver organizing committee spokeswoman Renee Smith-Valade said. Some of the prized tickets are already up for auction on the Vancouver Winter Games official website, although organizers put a mark-up limit of 10 times the face value for any fan-to-fan Internet sales. With seats going to 775 dollars, 550 dollars and 350 dollars at the start, resale prices are set to soar before the puck drops. This marked the first time an Olympics organizing group had set up a resale site for those who purchased seats but cannot use them or want to make a profit."Nobody is being forced to buy tickets they don't want," said International Olympic Committee communications director Mark Adams. Most US and Canada sports teams offer a resale ticket exchange sales program, although some restrict the direct team-sponsored system to season-ticket purchasers.Olympic organizers issued a warning typical at most events about people having to beware of counterfitters and noted there was no guarantee of authenticity for anything bought outside the official website auctions.Forget jumping in now.
